VOPP Joins “UNITE” May Day Celebration: A Triumph of Solidarity

Colombo, May 1, 2024 — The Voice of the Plantation People Organization (VOPP) stood shoulder to shoulder with other progressive forces in a resounding celebration of unity on this year’s May Day. Under the banner of “UNITE,” the event brought together a diverse coalition of Trade Unions, Civil Society Organizations, Journalists, and Activists at the Stanley Jansz Grounds in Colombo.

A Collective Call for Justice and Equality

The May Day rally was more than a mere gathering; it was a powerful assertion of the rights and aspirations of the working class. Here are the highlights:

1. Inclusive Participation: Over 45 trade unions and several civil society organizations rallied alongside their members. Their collective presence symbolized the strength of a movement committed to justice and equality.
2. 3000 Strong: Approximately 3000 working-class individuals—from plantation workers to urban laborers—joined the procession. Their voices echoed through the streets, demanding fair wages, improved working conditions, and dignity for all.
