Empowering Women: Community Peace Dialogue in Deniyaya

Deniyaya, Sri Lanka — April 7, 2024

In the tranquil town of Deniyaya, nestled amidst rolling hills and lush greenery, the Voice of the Plantation People Organization (VOPP) orchestrated a transformative event. On the 7th of April 2024, the elegant Chilled Hotel served as the backdrop for a gathering that would echo far beyond its walls.

Fostering Understanding: Women at the Forefront

The Community Peace Dialogue brought together 35 women, each with a story to tell and a vision for change. Here are the key highlights:

  1. Facilitator Extraordinaire: Mr. Abbas Hithayathullah, a tireless advocate for women’s rights, skillfully guided the program. His expertise ensured that participants not only understood Sri Lanka’s constitution but also grasped their rights as citizens. The room buzzed with anticipation.
  2. Women Engagement: The dialogue provided a platform for women to express their concerns, aspirations, and dreams. They delved into how their perspectives as plantation women intersect with democratic processes and governance. Their voices resonated with determination and hope.
  3. Shifting Power: The participants recognized a critical need for change. The power dynamics must shift—from the grip of Estate Management to the capable hands of Local Government Bodies. By empowering local decision-makers, they can shape policies that truly serve their communities.
  4. Future Actions: Inspired by the dialogue, the participants discussed future actions. They pledged to raise awareness, engage with local authorities, and demand equal opportunities. Their commitment to positive change reverberated, leaving no room for complacency.

A Call to Action

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over Deniyaya, these women emerged as torchbearers. The VOPP continues to champion understanding, advocacy, and empowerment. Let us stand with these fierce women, knowing that progress begins when we listen, learn, and lift each other toward a brighter future.
