Empowering Youth: Workshop on Democracy at Ga/Vivekaananda Tamil Vidyalaya

Elpitiya, Sri Lanka — April 5, 2024

In the heart of Elpitiya, where the rustling of palm leaves mingles with the eager voices of students, the Voice of the Plantation People Organization (VOPP) orchestrated a transformative workshop. On the 5th of April 2024, the school hall of Ga/Vivekaananda Tamil Vidyalaya buzzed with anticipation as 44 Grade 10 and 11 students gathered to explore the essence of democracy.

Fostering Understanding: The Role of Democracy

The workshop, led by the seasoned facilitator Mr. Weerasingham, aimed to ignite a spark of awareness among the young minds. Here are the key highlights:

  1. Facilitator Extraordinaire: Mr. Weerasingham skillfully guided the program, ensuring that the students not only understood the mechanics of democracy but also grasped its profound importance. His passion for civic education resonated with the participants.
  2. Students’ Engagement: The students actively engaged in discussions, sharing their experiences and concerns. Their voices echoed through the hall as they expressed their frustration. The school’s history revealed a stark reality: no teachers for History, Maths, or Science. Even today, these crucial subjects remain teacherless.
  3. A Cry for Representation: The absence of subject-specific educators has left these young learners feeling neglected. Their aspirations are stifled by the lack of guidance. They yearn for knowledgeable mentors who can unlock the doors of knowledge.
  4. Past Pass Exam Papers: Responding to the school principal’s request, the VOPP stepped in. We provided past exam papers to empower these students. Armed with knowledge, they can navigate the challenging educational landscape and strive for excellence.

A Call to Action

As the sun dipped below the horizon, leaving streaks of orange and pink over Elpitiya, the students departed with renewed determination. The seeds of democracy had been sown, and their voices would echo far beyond the school walls.

Let us nurture these young minds, for they hold the promise of a brighter, more informed future.
