Rathnapura, May 16, 2024 – Today witnessed a surge of public outrage in Rathnapura near the iconic clock tower as more than 200 individuals gathered to protest the brutal assault on Ratnapura, Dumbara Tamil Estate workers by the estate manager and his assistant. This incident has reignited long-standing tensions between laborers and management in the region.
The protest, organized by a coalition of civil society collectives, trade unions, and well-wishers, was fueled by the recurrent violence inflicted upon the estate workers. The workers, predominantly from the Malaiyaga plantation community, have endured a history of mistreatment and abuse, with today's assault serving as a poignant reminder of the systemic injustices they face.
In response to the egregious assault, the aggrieved parties wasted no time in seeking justice. A formal complaint was promptly filed at the Ratnapura Police Station, demanding swift and decisive action against the perpetrators. Concurrently, protestors converged on the Department of Labour in Ratnapura, urging authorities to intervene and address the rampant exploitation rampant in the region's estates.
Furthermore, the protest extended to the local office of the Human Rights Commission, where another complaint was lodged, underscoring the urgent need for accountability and protection of the workers' rights. The collective outcry underscored a resolute determination to end the cycle of violence and exploitation plaguing the Malaiyaga plantation workers.
