17th May 2024.
Voice of the Plantation People (VOPP) unequivocally condemns the brutal attack on Mr. Subramaniam Rajalingam, a retired plantation worker residing at Hayes Plantation Estate in the Ratnapura district. Mr. Rajalingam was assaulted by the Assistant Manager of the Hayes Estate this morning, an act that is both reprehensible and intolerable.
This incident follows closely on the heels of a mass protest held in Ratnapura on May 16, 2024, organized by civil society collectives, trade unions, journalists, well-wishers, and representatives of several political parties. The protest was a response to another brutal attack on a woman in Dumbara Estate, also in the Ratnapura district. The protesters demanded justice, highlighting the police's inaction in the Dumbara Estate case. It is deeply concerning that, despite these efforts, another violent assault has occurred so soon after.
Mr. Rajalingam is currently receiving treatment at Colonna Base Hospital. We stand in solidarity with him and his family during this difficult time and call for immediate and comprehensive action against the perpetrator.
VOPP demands that the authorities take swift and decisive action to bring the Assistant Manager responsible for this heinous act to justice. Such violent practices must be eradicated from our society, and the victims deserve justice and protection. We call upon the police and relevant authorities to ensure the safety and rights of plantation workers and to prevent further occurrences of such brutal acts.
Justice delayed is justice denied. We urge all stakeholders, including the government, law enforcement agencies, and the management of plantation estates, to prioritize the protection and welfare of plantation workers. VOPP will continue to monitor the situation closely and advocate for the rights and dignity of all plantation workers.
Voice of the Plantation People stands firm in its commitment to justice, human rights, and the well-being of the plantation community. We will not rest until justice is served.
