The event commenced with Arokkiyam Jesman emphasizing the
importance of peaceful coexistence and understanding among youth and women from
diverse backgrounds. The facilitator’s session, led by Mr. Anthony Jesudasan,
Executive Director of VOPP, aimed to educate participants on Sri Lanka’s
constitution and their rights as citizens, stressing the significance of
democratic processes. Previous workshop insights were shared to foster mutual
understanding.
A significant portion of the dialogue focused on the Malaiyaga ethnicity, highlighting its importance within Sri Lanka and the need to rectify the historical miscategorization of Malaiyaga Tamils as Indian migrant workers. Women participants shared their concerns regarding access to education, employment opportunities, healthcare, and gender-based violence, advocating for stronger legal protections and support systems. Meanwhile, male youth participants voiced concerns about limited job prospects, the need for skills training programs, challenges in community decision-making processes, and social issues such as substance abuse and youth delinquency.
The Youth Action Plan saw the drafting of a declaration for
a public rally, with Ms. Nirosha and Mr. Kavishka identified as speakers from
the Galle District. However, the difficulty in engaging male youth participation
was acknowledged, indicating a need for more effective strategies in future
events. Participants expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to engage
in dialogue and learn from each other's perspectives. Despite challenges, such
as low male youth participation, the event concluded on a hopeful note with a
strong sense of determination to pursue a more inclusive and democratic
society.
The Community Peace Dialogue in Galle proved to be a catalyst for transformation, inspiring young change-makers to advocate for their rights and work towards a brighter future. VOPP remains committed to supporting these initiatives, ensuring progress through dialogue and collective action. The meeting adjourned with participants feeling empowered and hopeful for a more inclusive future.
