Empowering Voices: Workshop on Human Rights and Right to Information Act Held in Nainamadama

Nainamadama, Sri Lanka - June 9, 2024 –

A transformative two-day residential workshop on Human Rights and the Right to Information Act (RTI) was held at the Chinthana Training Centre, bringing together youth, women, and community leaders from the Galle and Matara districts. Organized by the Voice of the Plantation People Organization (VOPP) with the support of the US Embassy and in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Development Journalist Forum (SDJF), the workshop aimed to educate and empower participants on their rights and the tools available to advocate for them.

Mr. Jagath Liyanarachchi, an esteemed attorney, facilitated the workshop, providing in-depth knowledge about the RTI and its application to the participants' everyday issues. The first day focused on the fundamental human rights of citizens, emphasizing the specific rights and challenges faced by the Malaiyaha community. Mr. Anthony Jesudasan led this session, sparking vital discussions about the community's rights and the obstacles they encounter.

Participants expressed a newfound resolve to actively seek and demand their rights as enshrined in the constitution, vowing no longer to remain silent in the face of injustice. They recognized the RTI as a powerful tool to enhance the welfare of the Malaiyaha community and committed to utilizing it effectively.

With around 20 participants in attendance, the workshop was a significant step toward fostering a more informed and proactive citizenry. The collective commitment to using the RTI for community betterment marks a promising advancement in the pursuit of justice and equality for the Malaiyaha community.
