Fostering Democratic Values: VOPP Hosts Workshop at G/Saraswathi Tamil Maha Vidyalaya

Galle District, Sri Lanka - June 19, 2024 – The Voice of the Plantation People Organization (VOPP) conducted an enlightening workshop on the importance of democracy at G/Saraswathi Tamil Maha Vidyalaya in Thalanga. The event, which took place from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM, saw the enthusiastic participation of around 50 students.

Facilitated by Mr. Anthony Jesudasan, the workshop provided a comprehensive overview of democratic principles and their relevance in contemporary society. Through interactive sessions and group discussions, students identified key issues related to democracy and explored strategies to overcome these challenges. The active engagement of the students highlighted their keen interest and commitment to understanding and upholding democratic values.

In addition to Mr. Anthony Jesudasan's expertise, the workshop benefited from the presence of VOPP staff and youth members who had previously participated in the Community Peace Dialogue program. Their contributions enriched the discussions, providing real-life perspectives on the importance of democracy in fostering peace and community cohesion.

As part of their commitment to supporting students, VOPP, with the support of the US Embassy, provided school bags to all participating students. Additionally, recognizing the importance of health and hygiene, VOPP distributed sanitary napkins to the girls, addressing a critical need and promoting the well-being of female students.

This initiative by VOPP underscores its dedication to nurturing informed and active citizens who are equipped to contribute positively to their communities. By focusing on young minds, the organization aims to instill a deep appreciation for democratic values and inspire the next generation of leaders. The workshop's success is a testament to the collaborative efforts of all participants and the effective facilitation by Mr. Jesudasan. VOPP remains committed to promoting democratic engagement and empowering communities across Sri Lanka.
